![]() As a follow up to the post on 9/9, I came across this article, 30 Questions to Ask Your Kid Instead of “How Was Your Day?” I loved how the different all the questions are. Some are serious, some are funny and some are personal. While you may not use the question about which playground skill they mastered, I think the list gives you great suggestions on how to keep the conversation going with our kids! I don't know about you, but I often find myself asking my husband the same thing everyday as well. I plan to use some of these - 20 Questions to Ask Your Significant Other Instead of “How Was Your Day?” -Katie Bryant ![]() Fall in Texas means football and football means homecoming and homecoming means mums (which did you know are primarily a Texas thing?). Homecoming also means dresses, dinner reservations, party buses/limos, and parties (both pre-graming and the after party). We want to make sure that parents are educated in providing a fun but safe homecoming experience for their teenagers! Did you know that when a teen admits to drinking, they aren't admitting to drinking the same way an adult drinks? Teens chronically are binge drinking. Binge drinking is much more dangerous than casual/social drinking. This article explains the dangers of binge drinking and how to talk to your child about their drinking habits! Often times an easy location to binge drink is on the party bus/limo ride over to dinner, the game, or the after party. Here are some tips on what to look out for if your child is celebrating with a party bus! We also want to remind parents (and their teens) about services like Uber, Lyft, Yellow Cab, BeMyDD, and SoberMonkeys because there is no "good" reason to drink and drive. Homecoming CAN be an amazing, memorable, fun, and safe time. Make sure you are talking with your teen so that they can enjoy this homecoming and future events too! Go Chaps! -Kristi Waidhofer Parents can be just as busy as their kids. Finding quality time together can be difficult at times and we can find ourselves in the routine of just asking, “How was your day?” all the time. I love how this article highlights four questions that you can ask your child every day: 1. How's life? 2. What's up with your friends? 3. Anything cool going on? 4. Do you need help with anything? It is amazing what our kids will share with us if we ask the question in a way that they perceive is just a causal conversation. Try it! These simple questions may keep the conversation going and you in the loop on what is really going on in your child’s life. -Katie Bryant "[Sleep deprivation] is extremely detrimental at all stages of life," Dr. Michael Breus, a clinical psychologist and sleep specialist, told The Huffington Post in an email. "In the teen years, when development continues ... the sleep deprivation effects of brain and body development are significant."
We can all use more sleep but I cannot stress enough the importance of sleep for our students. We have overly involved and busy kids but also have extremely tired kids. Try to establish a sleep schedule now! This is a perfect time to start (or revisit) healthy sleep habits! -Katie Bryant |
