THE power to prevent

8/25/2014

At work I often think “if this were my child” or “if I was this parent” in situations.  That thought process is much deeper now that I have my own children.  I have been reminding parents for years that they have the greatest influence on their children.  Even at one and three years old, in a program only two days a week, I hope my children love every minute when they are there.  I want the other kids to be nice to them and to want to be their friend.  I am positive throughout the many school years to come and any activity my kids are involved in I will have this same worry.  The reality is not all kids will be nice and not all kids will want to be their friend.  And that is ok.  I just hope as parents we have equipped them to be able to handle it.  I just received the email below from StopBullying.gov in my inbox and thought it was perfect to share as we kick off another school year!

“Parents and caregivers who spend at least 15 minutes a day talking with their child can build the foundation for a strong relationship, and help prevent bullying.

KnowBullying, a new mobile app by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), encourages dialogue between you and your children and helps you start a conversation.

KnowBullying by SAMHSA includes:

  • Conversation Starters: Start a meaningful discussion with your child.
  • Tips: Learn ways to prevent bullying.
  • Warning Signs: Know if your child is affected by bullying.
  • Reminders: Find the right time to connect with your child.
  • Social Media: Share tactics and useful advice.
  • Section for Educators: Prevent bullying in the classroom.
The KnowBullying app is available for Android™ and iPhone®. It is a free resource for mobile devices provided by SAMHSA, in conjunction with the StopBullying.gov Federal partnership.

Put the power to prevent bullying in your hand. Get the KnowBullying app.”
