Taking Care of Ourselves

3/27/2015

High school is hard. Jobs are hard. Extracurricular activities are hard. Friendships and relationships are hard. Add these all together and you've got the makings of a completely overwhelmed person. Exhaustion and feeling overwhelmed are often the gateway into anxiety, depression and many other mental health disorders.

Awareness is the number one way to intervene on these major issues. Take the time to refresh yourself on the what depression looks like.  Also read this reminder from NAMI about where depression and anxiety can exhibit themselves.

Coping skills are also important interventions against exhaustion, burnout, anxiety and depression. Check out this story to learn why yoga works to relieve stress!

Barb Steinberg reminds us about the importance of sleep and how to make sure your child is getting the best sleep possible (while it's geared towards girls, all her suggestions apply toward boys as well!)

Finally, this is a free webinar geared towards learning how to Cope with Stress and Depression!

Spring break is upon us but with that brings many tests, quizzes, and assignments! We wanted to take a moment to reflect upon the importance of not brooding.

10 Surprising Reasons You Shouldn't Brood

Next remind yourself of the importance of self-care and now with the awareness to not spend time worrying and ruminating about things, a fun alternative suggestion is the Bucket List website. Let your imagination run wild, it's good for the soul!

Have a happy and safe spring break!

The 8 Instinctive Habits of Remarkable Leaders (or parent)!

3/6/2015

I recently came across an article titled “The 8 Instinctive Habits of Remarkable Leaders.”  As I read the following, I thought of myself (as a parent) and how these are just as important to parents!

They praise.
What child doesn’t want to be praised?  It’s easy to focus on what they aren’t doing or what they need to do but what if we started to focus on what they are doing and recognizing it?

They decide.
As a parent sometimes it is hard to make a decision and stand by it.

They take responsibility.
Often times we expect our children to own up to their mistakes but as parents do we always do it too?  I bet if we were all answering honestly the answer would be no.

They communicate.
In parenting we often miss the why part.  It’s much easier to say “because I said.”  Our children may not agree with the outcome but if we help them understand why the outcome is usually much better for all.  And we all probably could work on listening better because the most effective communication involves way more listening than talking.

They set the example.
I catch myself all the time thinking “they are watching” or “react as I expect my daughters to react” and so on.  It’s tough but they are watching us all the time and often act as we do.

They give feedback.
We may not always want it but we all need constructive feedback.  It’s ok to listen and take to heart what our children, spouse, friend, colleague, etc.  We all want to be the best version of ourselves.

They seek help.
This may not always be easy but it’s healthy to be vulnerable and lean on others around you.

They challenge.
Our kids want to be challenged but many need our support along the way.  They may never ask for it but they need it.
