As a clinician with my own young children, this topic is such a great reminder for us. There were times throughout the talk I was thinking of other relationships in my lift where I need to work on my validation skills.
Here were my take aways from the parent discussion that may be useful to you:
- We should examine our own expectations for our children. Are they too much or too little? What are our child's expectations of themselves and do they align with mine? If not, there needs to be an open discussion.
- Body language and tone is a huge part of validation. It cannot just be words we are using.
- Giving choice especially when it pertains to discipline.
